Gays win in California, lose in Arizona – News Wrap Up

Arizona Gov. Jan Brewer is on the war path. In a not-so-subtle way, she is marginalizing and discriminating against nearly every minority group in her state.

To start the week off, Brewer cut domestic partner benefits for state employees [2] and their dependents – on the pretense of saving a few bucks. She saves $3 million by cutting the benefits of roughly 800 affected employees. How much does she spend on benefits for everyone else? About $625 million. Looking at it that way, $3 million is merely a drop in the budgetary bucket.

The Arizona Daily Star reported: “Gov. Jan Brewer said Wednesday that she believes ‘God has placed me in this powerful position as Arizona’s governor’ to help the state weather its troubles.”

Somebody please remind Brewer and her ilk of the phrase “separation of church and state.” It’s in the Constitution.

The move, of course, follows on the footsteps of the legislation she signed on Friday that makes racial profiling legal. If someone is suspected of being illegally in the United States – and a description of that is quite fuzzy – a police officer is legally required to ask for paperwork proving citizenship. The law is not only detestable, it is likely illegal [3].

San Francisco officials have called for a boycott [4] of Arizona. And flights from Mexico to Phoenix are being canceled by Aeromexico airlines. But that’s just the beginning. If Brewer wants to create her own Aryan-zona, her state will suffer the economic consequences. It’s just a matter of time.

Speaking of unnecessary laws, California finally addressed a decades-old piece of legislation [9] that compared homosexuality to child molestation – both were in need of a “cure.”

Unlike Arizona, California is moving in the right direction as the House of Representatives adopted a measure that directs the Department of Mental Health to remove statements that dictate the agency research “causes and cures of homosexuality.” The measure is now headed to the Senate.

I can almost hear the California Legislature saying, “Cures, we don’t need no stinkin’ cures.”

In more good news from California, a leader in the state’s nurses’ union, Mary Kay Henry [11], was picked to head the Service Employees International Union. Henry, an out lesbian, will represent more than 2 million workers in the United States, Canada and Puerto Rico.

She becomes both the first woman and the first person in the LGBT community to head the union.

And, finally, something that has nothing to do with politics or immigration or any anti-gay sentiments, I found this little nugget of, well, sparkle power: Canned unicorn meat [13].

ThinkGeek, for the low, low price of $9.99, is offering Spam-inspired containers of precious unicorn meat, which is noted as “an excellent source of sparkle.”

In a moving tale of selflessness, we learn about the Sisters at Radiant Farms, who “have dedicated their lives to nursing these elegant creatures through their final days.”

Then they chop the unicorns up and process them for a profit. Mmm, mmm good.

Arizona Governor Signs Nation’s Toughest Immigration Bill

April 26, 2010 1 comment

At the time, the L.A. Times reported: “Immigrant rights groups were horrified, and contended that Arizona would be transformed into a police state. ‘It’s beyond the pale,’ said Chris Newman, legal director of the National Day Laborer Organizing Network. ‘It appears to mandate racial profiling.’ The bill, known as SB 1070, makes it a misdemeanor to lack proper immigration paperwork in Arizona. It also requires police officers, if they form a ‘reasonable suspicion’ that someone is an illegal immigrant, to determine the person’s immigration status. Currently, officers can inquire about someone’s immigration status only if the person is a suspect in another crime. The bill allows officers to avoid the immigration issue if it would be impractical or hinder another investigation. Citizens can sue to compel police agencies to comply with the law, and no city or agency can formulate a policy directing its workers to ignore the law — a provision that advocates say prevents so-called sanctuary orders that police not inquire about people’s immigration status. The bill cements the position of Arizona, whose border with Mexico is the most popular point of entry for illegal immigrants into this country, as the state most aggressively using its own laws to fight illegal immigration.”

God probably told her to do it, like God told her to take away the state’s domestic partner benefits a year after they were implemented.

Obama criticized the bill on Friday, asking the Justice Dept. to investigate its legality.

Michael Steele tosses out dusty race card to deflect attention away from his outlandish incompetence

April 9, 2010 Leave a comment

Wow — weren’t we told that the RNC is a color-blind organization and that Michael Steele was picked as the best lawn jockey man for the job of a new, diverse GOP? Well hold that thought as MC Steele tries to lob the race card NOW as the scandals proliferate under his watch. Honey put the card down — that won’t fly in your pup-tent party. The only reason you were put in that job was because selection number two, Katon Dawson, had a little “whites only” club history that raised the spectre of being labeled the “white sheet” party.
Republican National Committee Chairman Michael Steele’s comment on “Good Morning America” today that he and President Obama have a slimmer margin of error because of their race was dismissed by the White House as “silly.”
Embattled Republican National Committee Chairman Michael Steele said he won’t resign despite calls for him to step down amid reports of the group’s excessive spending, adding that he and other African-American leaders such as President Obama have a slimmer margin of error because of their race.

‘The honest answer is, ‘yes,” he said on ‘Good Morning America’ today. ‘Barack Obama has a slimmer margin. A lot of folks do. It’s a different role for me to play and others to play and that’s just the reality of it. But you just take that as a part of the nature of it.’

Well he’s half-right — it’s pretty clear from the teabaggers and bigots who love getting face time that Barack Obama has a slimmer margin with those folks, but MC Steele? I thought he was above it all, that it was a new day in post-racial America. Oliver Willis:
I love Steele trying to compare himself to President Obama, when in fact Steele isn’t even a grub on the other side of the President’s shoe. And then he plays the race card, while he’s the head of a party packed to the gills with racist detractors of the President. Such is the life of the black Republican: Nobody actually likes you.
Cheryl @ J&J Politics also calls Steele on his BS, with “Steele’s Audacity of Incompetence.”
What enrages the black progressive blogosphere is that we all know that Steele’s statement is generally true — if you’re a person of color, you do have to excel beyond your white peers, and are given a smaller margin for error — less for you personally, but for those who follow you on the path. It’s a sad reality still — but for Steele, who leads a party that claims racism is dead, and that merit alone is how people are perceived and judged, is outrageous. Your ass needs to be kicked to the curb. No amount of tap-dancing for your masters is going to paper over the approval of lesbian S&M club expenses in a family values party, and certainly not this week’s pathetic developments, that Steele cannot run away from. (Politics Daily):

Republican National Committee chairman Michael Steele — who really can’t afford another ‘holy —-” story after a GOP staffer dropped $1,900 at a lesbian-bondage themed Hollywood club and a top conservative called for an RNC donor boycott — has hired a new “special assistant for finance.”
Although described by many as a smart, gifted and glib fundraiser, Neil S. Alpert, 31, who began work on March 29, probably won’t do much to burnish Steele’s image as a money manager. This is the same Neil S. Alpert who in July 2007 was ordered by the District of Columbia government to repay nearly $70,000 in unauthorized expenses and unaccounted money from a pair of local baseball groups he had chaired. He was also fined $4,000.

Does Steele’s shop not do a reference check, or is all about a handshake and bullsh*tting? How bad was this malfeasance? Alpert also used the money, which he never paid back, to pay his rent!
“His expenses were beyond excessive. They were grandiose,” said Tom Smith, a board member of both groups, a Washington marketing consultant and a Democratic activist. “This was money that was to be directed to inner-city kids, to get the private sector to revitalize playing fields that had grown bare because the city didn’t have the money to keep them up, to provide equipment, to hold an essay contest with the winners getting to go to spring training,” Smith told me by phone. “Unfortunately, it doesn’t take long to go through $70,000.”
Even before this nonsense erupted in the media, the RNC’s biggest moneyman quit, stating he couldn’t get the deep pocket donors to cough up any more dough while the RNC was under Steele’s command.
Former Ambassador Sam Fox, a top supporter of George W. Bush who was one of the co-chairmen of the Republican Regents – the RNC’s top-level fundraising board – has left the post, two Republican sources said.
…Fox was “deeply troubled by the pattern of self-inflicted wounds and missteps,” another major Republican fundraiser told me today, and had “lost confidence” in Steele.

He was also finding it harder and harder to tap fellow wealthy Republicans for the RNC, the source said.

So the fact that Steele is now trying to back the RNC into a corner with a bogus cry of racism is so patently offensive that it may just work simply because the RNC picked him because of race, and now will feel obligated to stand by this incompetent boob.
Hey, the longer he stays, the more disarray and less money go into the RNC coffers, so MC Steele, keep rapping away on that tip.
